Become a discerning media consumer: know what (and who) to believe on the web, and why in this one-day course.

If you’re like most of us, you get a lot of your news and information from social media, websites and other corners of the internet. But do you really know who and what to trust on the web? The ability to navigate the media is a crucial life skill in today’s digital world, one that helps you make informed decisions about every facet of your life. The good news is that media literacy is something that you can easily sharpen. Learn to think critically about what you’re seeing, reading and hearing from seasoned journalists and media experts, who will give you the lowdown on media techniques and how to check your facts. Beat the scammers by becoming more media-savvy and avoid information overload by zoning in on credible, useful sources.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Find and evaluate valuable sources of news and information online
  • Easily spot mimic sites, trojan horse articles and fake posts
  • Distinguish between facts, opinions, news and truth
  • Understand the basic principles of journalism and fact checking
  • Sniff out suspect content (a.k.a. “fake” news) and avoid scams
  • Pick up on and help combat bias in the media
  • Improve your internet research skills
